Travellers face discrimination in access to many services throughout Ireland, including sport. A legacy of discrimination has meant that Travellers often feel unwelcome in local sports clubs and venues. Stereotypes about which sports Travellers participate in persist. The inclusion of Travellers throughout local sporting activities is a right for Travellers and can improve understanding and harmony for everybody.
TRUST Ireland is working with partner organisations within the Traveller community nationwide to cultivate an understanding of sport as a human right that Travellers are fully entitled to. The resources and information below highlight the barriers that Travellers face and the changes Travellers would like to see to participate equally in sport. Sports clubs who wish to create an environment of fairness and equality, nurturing respect for all cultures, and including travellers within their activities will also find helpful information.
