Migrants, refugees and asylum seekers can face many obstacles to participating in their new community, including in sport. Obstacles can include discrimination, lack of knowledge on local opportunities and facilities, cultural and linguistic barriers, etc.
Participation in local sports activities can be empowering, providing an opportunity to share skills, talent and enthusiasm with local teams while experiencing the local culture, meeting new people and blending into new communities. Teams also benefit from creating a more open and welcoming environment where everyone can learn from each other.
Therefore, sports have an essential role in realising individual potential while meeting human rights obligations. TRUST Ireland is working with migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers to identify the needs, barriers and facilitators to engaging in sport. The below resources are for migrants, refugees and asylum seekers and organisations representing these groups to understand and advocate for their human rights in and through sport. Sports organisations and clubs can also use them to create a welcoming environment for migrants, refugees and asylum seekers.
